Event: Lecture “Bringing Dreams to Reality” by Filipe Balestra (10/1)

September 24, 2014 in Lecture

The lecture will describe three projects from Balestra’s interdisciplinary platform Urban Nouveau:
1. Incremental Housing Strategy in India: a method to legalize a natural construction process made by the urban poor, keeping the urban fabric of the village intact and transforming old shacks into safe living structures while bringing water, waste water removal and electricity into every home. Each house prototype is the result of a participatory design with the residents and every home is customizable by the user. The pilot project comprises 1200 houses.
2. Connecting Stockholm: a long term regional strategy for the region of Stockholm in Sweden. The tactic aims at framing the urban growth of the city and the suburbs in what Urban Nouveau calls bridge villages. These urban bridges are communities that stand in between the currently segregated pieces of the city.
3. TISA / The Informal School of Architecture: the launching of a vehicle to bring students out of the school or university building and connect them with underprivileged communities and people with hardcore problems. By interacting with locals and understanding their challenges, the students can get together to design and build incremental solutions for immediate positive change. The pilot project took place in Cova do Vapor, Trafaria, Portugal.

Filipe Balestra works in the fields of architecture and urbanism in both formal and informal workscapes through participatory design experiences. Balestra understands the human being has not yet learned to live on planet Earth, so he dedicates his work to drawing the path in the direction of our collective evolution.

Event: Lecture by David Jason Gerber (5/20)

May 18, 2014 in Lecture

Dr. David Jason Gerber, a faculty member at the USC School of Architecture will be giving his lecture on May 20th at the ADS Studio(Engineering bldg No.1 Room 415). The lecture is entitled “Parametric Tendencies & Design Agency” and will argue most digital approaches are a consideration of associativity, constraints, objectives, and coupling when applied to architectural design exploration. Dr. Gerber has extensive experience in computational design through working on various projects at Zaha Hadid Architects and Moshe Safdie and Associates and also through teaching at Harvard University and at the Architectural Association.

Event: Lecture by Renee Puusepp (5/21)

May 18, 2014 in Lecture

Renee Puusepp, an architect and researcher of computational architecture, is going to talk about his research and projects at the ADS Studio (Engineering bldg No.1 Room 415) on May 21st. His special interests lie in using generative, parametric, and programmable tools at the early stage of the design process. He runs London-based architectural practice SliderStudio and works as a researcher at the Estonian Academy of Arts.

Event: Lecture by Hiroaki Saito (5/30)

May 29, 2013 in Lecture

Hiroaki Saito, the head of CG team at Kengo Kuma and Assosiates will talk about their design process using Rhino and Grasshopper for many of their projects. It is strongly recommended to students to attend to learn about techniques for digital design and visualization. The lecture will be in Japanese, but you are welcome to join to see how these digital tools are used in the practical environment.
